Did you miss the December 23 Obamacare deadline? Don’t worry – it’s not too late, but you do need to act soon! You can still receive coverage next year but it will not start on January 1. Depending on when you sign up and pay your premium, your coverage will start at different times. Here’s how it works:
If you enroll…
Between the 1st and 15th of the month, coverage under your plan starts on the 1st of the following month.
If you enroll…
Between the 16th and the final day of the month, coverage under your plan starts on the 1st day of the second following month.
For example, say you enroll on January 5 of next year (and pay your premium on time). Your coverage will start on February 1. If you wait to do this till, say, January 18, your coverage won’t start till March 1.
You can do this at any time between now and the end of March, but we urge you not to wait. The next major deadline is March 31, 2014 – the end of open enrollment – and after that there is a much larger gap between your next opportunity for coverage. If you miss that deadline, you won’t be able to sign up again until the fall, and not only will you be left without coverage during that period, but you may be subject to a larger fine on your tax return the following year.
